Data insightsThe CPI can indicate the overall rate of inflation and the cost of living in a country, as it tracks the change in the prices of goods and services. The CPI can also provide insights into the spending patterns of households, as it weights prices based on the expenditure patterns of households. The food and beverage category typically has the largest weight in the CPI basket, so changes in food prices can have a significant impact on the overall CPI.The CPI can also be used to adjust wages, pensions, and other government benefits to account for changes in the cost of living.Studying CPI trends over time can help identify economic trends and inform policy decisions, such as adjusting interest rates or implementing fiscal policies to manage inflation.

MethodologyThe Consumer Price Index (CPI) is calculated in India by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) through a survey of households conducted every month. The survey covers around 1,200 markets in 310 towns and cities across the country, and collects data on the prices of around 460 goods and services. The survey is designed to be representative of the consumption patterns of urban households, with the sample size and selection of markets and households being determined by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO).The prices collected in the survey are weighted based on the expenditure patterns of households, with food and beverages accounting for the largest weight, followed by housing and fuel. The resulting index measures the average change in the prices of a basket of goods and services consumed by urban households over time, and is used as a measure of inflation.
