Methodology The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is calculated in India by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) through a survey of households conducted every month. The survey covers around 1,200 markets in 310 towns and cities across the country, and collects data on the prices of around 460 goods and services. The survey is designed to be representative of the consumption patterns of urban households, with the sample size and selection of markets and households being determined by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO).The prices collected in the survey are weighted based on the expenditure patterns of households, with food and beverages accounting for the largest weight, followed by housing and fuel. The resulting index measures the average change in the prices of a basket of goods and services consumed by urban households over time, and is used as a measure of inflation.
